Summary of 2026 Beach Renourishment Updates
Storms are powerful and can change our coastline, moving the sand and destroying dunes. Hurricane Ian struck the Grand Strand coast in September 2022, followed by Hurricane Debby in August 2024, causing severe erosion. The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company will place two million cubic yards of material (equivalent to 200,000 dump trucks) along 26 miles of the Grand Strand’s coastline, including Ocean Lakes’ beachfront.
According to a press release from The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, “Renourishment work will begin in North Myrtle Beach in December 2025, proceed to the City of Myrtle Beach in February 2026, and conclude with Garden City and Surfside Beach beginning in April 2026. As with any large coastal project, the timeline remains subject to change due to weather conditions or equipment availability.” The timing is out of our control, but hopefully, they will complete our beachfront in the spring. Our coastline has weathered many storms since 2019 (when our beach renourishment occurred).
Safety is the top priority. Officials explain, “Construction zones will be clearly marked, and we will urge everyone to stay outside of these areas and respect signage and barriers. Heavy equipment, such as bulldozers and pipelines, will be in operation, and maintaining a safe distance ensures the protection of both workers and the public.” The renourishment is funded entirely by the Corps of Engineers and will cost $72 million.

Making Myrtle Beach Bigger and Better
Beach renourishment is the process of adding sand to the shoreline to restore areas affected by erosion. Over time, tides and storms naturally wear away the beach. This project helps rebuild it.
For guests staying in our Myrtle Beach vacation rentals, this is a big win. A wider beach means:
- More room for families to spread out
- Better protection for oceanfront homes
- Improved long-term beach health
In short, this temporary project leads to lasting benefits for everyone who loves the coast.
Timeline & Logistics of Myrtle Beach Renourishment at Ocean Lakes
The renourishment project will move along the Grand Strand in sections. Crews work in phases, meaning the timing at any one location can vary.
At this time, we do not know exactly when work will reach the mile of oceanfront near Ocean Lakes. As soon as updates are available, Leaseholders and guests with reservations will be notified.
You can track real-time updates with the Official USACE Project Tracker. Once crews arrive, they are expected to work along the 5,000 feet of beachfront for about 1–2 weeks.
Things to Know About Safety & Swimming During the Renourishment Project
Safety is a top priority during beach renourishment. The good news is that the ocean remains open for swimming.
Here’s what to expect:
- Swimming is allowed outside active work zones
- Clearly marked areas will guide where to avoid
- Lifeguards and crews help maintain a safe environment
Families visiting our Ocean Lakes rentals can still enjoy the water, just with a little extra awareness.

What to Expect on the Sand at OFLC
While the results are exciting, the process does come with some temporary changes.
During renourishment, you may notice:
- Large equipment operating on the beach
- Pipes transporting sand (called slurry pipes)
- Work crews moving along the shoreline
- Increased noise from machinery
Only about 1,000 feet of beach will be closed at any given time. That leaves plenty of space for guests to relax and play.
When you’re staying in our Myrtle Beach rentals, you’ll still have access to the beach—just with a slightly different view during construction.
